Let the Child Discover Himself in School…
The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things, says Jean Piaget
As schools vie for excellence, fame and renown, the true motto of education should never be condoned under any circumstances. Every educator shall endeavour to create an environment wherein the child will be able to invent and discover himself.
Every child is born unique and endowed with astounding talents and untapped potential. Hence, it is the responsibility of the educators to tap the innate talents and tap the unearthed potentials, providing ample opportunities to bring out excellence in every facet of student’s life and welfare.
Being in the competitive world, we should simply be carried by the notion-Marks the only way to success. In pursuit of marks, we will lose sight of the holistic development of the child. Hence, marks should not be the prime aim of the school, but inculcating values, ethics, positive attitudes, forbearance, respect for one another, building character and creating good and patriotic citizens should also be considered as vital and predominant as academics.
Teaching should not be teacher-centred, but it should be student-centered in order to facilitate effective learning among students. True education should connect students to the outside world, making them experience the concepts and ideas learned in the classroom. Moreover, true education should involve students in the real life scenario so that they will understand the concepts they are learning at school. For this, schools should strive to create a platform and environment wherein involvement of students becomes an absolute reality. And it is apt to reiterate the Chinese Proverb: Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; but involve me and I’ll understand.
Besides knowledge, character-building becomes vital in schools. Students should have good and strong character in values and ethics so that they will not give up in the future under any circumstances. Our education system shall cultivate individual and critical thinking so that they will emancipate themselves from the rote learning, and restrained thinking.
Let the child grow and enjoy learning at its own pace and develop novel and free individual thinking. Let every effort of the teaching fraternity translate into students’ achievements and laurels and let every child discover himself in school!
Moreover, I am very much delighted to hear that Cauverians’ performance in academics, co-curricular so far has been heart-warming and highly commendable. It is on way to carve a niche for itself in the district and in the state.
